Pope Viktor died in Montecassino on September 16, 1087 . Shortly before his death, he recommended the election of Cardinal Odon de Lagery as his successor. Rome was under the control of Antipope Clement III at that time . , which was supported by Emperor Henry IV , and there was no hope of a quick return. That is why the followers of Viktor III gathered. on March 9th in Terracina, under the protection of the Norman army, to elect the new Pope. In addition to the cardinal bishops as papal voters, two representatives of the other cardinal classes , over forty bishops and abbots , took part; Benedict, the prefect of Rome, and Countess Mathilde von Tuszien attended.

Initially, three days of fasting and prayer were announced and the meeting was suspended until Sunday, March 12, 1088. The congregation convened again that Sunday. The Cardinal Bishops of Albano, Tusculum and Porto proposed Odon de Lagery, the Cardinal Bishop of Ostia, as Pope. This accepted the election and gave himself the name Urban II. The Cardinal Bishop Pietro Igneo Aldobrandini of Albano enthroned the Pope and celebrated the accompanying mass. The Pope was only able to enter Rome in November 1088.
