Pietro Igneo Aldobrandini

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Pietro Igneo Aldobrandini OSBVall , also Peter Igneus , Petrus Igneo , Pietro Igneo , Pedro el Ígneo and Pietro Igneo Aldobrandeschi di Sovana (* early 11th century in Florence ; † 11 November 1089 ) was a cardinal of the Roman Church .

Life

Pietro Igneo Aldobrandini came from the dynasty of the Counts of Soana and was a relative of the later canonized Giovanni Gualberto (around 995-1073), the founder of the Benedictine order of Vallombrosa. In 1018, when he was still very young, he entered the community of the Vallombrosans.

On February 23, 1068 he passed a divine judgment (or a trial by fire ) to convict the bishop of Florence Pietro Mezzobarbo (Peter of Pavia) of simony . Shortly afterwards he became prior of the Passignano monastery; later also abbot of San Salvatore in Fucecchio , he also held this position as cardinal. Pope Gregory VII finally called him to Rome.

In a consistory in 1072 he was elevated to Cardinal Bishop of Albano . Probably the first mention of a cardinal bishop is in October 1072 on the occasion of the consecration of the church Santi Donato e Nicola in Citille, but this does not indicate which diocese he presided over. In later documents he appears as "Abbot of Fucecchio and Bishop of Albano", for example on October 23, 1074, September 3, 1076, February 7, 1077 (consecration of the church of S. Miniatis in Rubbicana ), November 15, 1077 and on January 27, 1081. Later he was Legate in Italy, Germany and France. He took part in the papal election in 1086 , in which Viktor III. was elected Pope, and was one of those bishops who ordained the newly elected bishop . He also took part in the papal election in 1088 , from which Urban II emerged as pope. He is mentioned in a papal bull dated July 8, 1089.

Pietro Igneo Aldobrandini wrote a treatise on the Eucharist .

Life dates and relationship to the Aldobrandini family - controversies

In the Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani , Nicolangelo D'Acunto argues against an origin of Pietro Igneo from the Aldobrandini family :

“Del tutto priva di fondamento si dimostra la tradizione che ne dichiarava l'appartenenza alla famiglia toscana degli Aldobrandini.”

"Without any basis, the tradition mentions a mere alleged belonging to the Tuscan family of the Aldobrandini."

- Nicolangelo D'Acunto : Dizionario Biografico degli Italiani (DBI) 2015

According to D'Acunto, Pietro Igneo would have been born around 1020 and would have joined the community between 1036 and 1038 when the Vallombrosans were founded between the ages of 16 and 18. The portrayal of his family relationship with the Aldobrandini and his birth shortly after 1000 would have been the attempt by Curia Cardinal Pietro Aldobrandini , Cardinal Depot Clemens VIII , to legitimize his own origins towards the Vallombrosans and to win their goodwill. Furthermore, Pietro's early becoming a monk in 1018 would then be understood as the attempt of the Vallombrosans to show the independence of their founder Gualberto from any influence of Romualdo di Ravenna (and thus the Camaldolese ).
