Pope election 1227

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The papal election of 1227 (March 19) was after the death of Pope Honorius III. on March 18, 1227 in Rome.

The cardinals present in Rome gathered in the Septasolium on the day after the death of Honorius III. and decided to elect the new Pope by compromissum , d. H. not through the entire college of cardinals , but through a committee given the power to appoint the new Pope. The same procedure had already been used in the election of the Pope in 1216 . The committee counted three cardinals, including Cardinal Bishops Ugolino di Segni of Ostia and Conrad of Urach of Porto (the name of the third is unknown). Initially the committee elected its member Konrad von Urach with two votes out of three, but he rejected the tiara . Thereupon the remaining cardinals elected unanimously on March 19, 1227 Ugolino di Segni, d. H. the second committee member. He reluctantly accepted the high honor and called himself Pope Gregory IX.

The new Pope received the pallium on March 21, 1227 in the Vatican basilica and was enthroned on the same day in the Lateran basilica . On April 11, he was crowned by his relative Ottaviano Conti di Segni , Archdeacon of the College, in the Basilica Liberii .
