Béranger Frédol the Elder (* around 1250 in Lavérune ; † June 11, 1323 in Avignon ) was Bishop of Béziers and cardinal .

Life

He was the son of Guillaume Frédol, Seigneur de Lavérune, a nephew of Bertrand Got, who became Pope on June 5, 1305 as Clement V , and an uncle of Cardinal (1312) Béranger Frédol the Younger . At the beginning of his career he was canon and sub-cantor in Béziers in the cathedral chapter and from 1287 abbot of Saint-Aphrodise, the monastery belonging to the basilica of the same name. Later he belonged to the cathedral chapter of Narbonne , was archdeacon at the church of Saint-André in Corbières , canon in Aix-en-Provence , chaplain to Pope Boniface VIII and law professor at the University of Bologna .

In 1294 he was elected Bishop of Béziers, the consecration took place on October 28, 1294. From 1296 he was commissioned by Pope Boniface VIII to compile the Liber Sextus , the third part of the Corpus Iuris Canonici , the collection of Roman canon law, which was published in 1298. From 1298 he was judge ( auditor ) at what was later called the Roman Rota Court of the Curia.

At the consistory of December 15, 1305, already six months after his election, Clemens V made his nephew Cardinal ( Cardinal Priest of Santi Nereo e Achilleo , 1309 (after August 10, probably in December) Cardinal Bishop of Frascati ) ; in addition, he was in Clemens' entire pontificate of his deputy ( cardinal vicar ) as Bishop of Rome . In 1306 he was appointed major penitentiary , chairman of the Apostolic Penitentiary , one of the three highest courts of justice of the Church. In the Templar trial , he was one of the five cardinals charged with investigating the Church. From June 28 to July 1, 1308, they conducted the interrogations of the knights and commander of the order separately in Poitiers (the Pope's residence at the time), and in August at Chinon Castle the interrogations of the Grand Master Jacques de Molay and the other great dignitaries ( Hugues de Pairaud , Geoffroy de Charnay , Geoffroy de Gonneville and Raimbaud de Caromb ). In 1312 he was again with the French King Philip IV , this time as papal legate.

He took part in the conclave from 1314 to 1316 in Carpentras and from 1315 in Lyon , at the end of which John XXII. was chosen. In April 1321 he was appointed cardinal dean.

Béranger Frédol was buried in the Cathedral of Béziers .
