Culinary traditions

The Torta Bertolina (also just Bertolina) is a cake made from crema. Its origins are not entirely clear, but they probably date back to 1800. The cake is round in shape. It is golden brown and smells of American grapes (often the Concord variety ), which make up the main ingredient. The crust has a few holes and is not uniform. The first information about the use of American grapes dates back to the 19th century. Every year, in September , the Bertolina Festival is celebrated in Crema.

The Spongarda is a cake made from crema. Some pastry shops joined forces in 2009 for the “Congrega della Spongarda”. The name is derived from the Latin word "spongia" (sponge). The name Spongarda itself has been documented since 1755. The first preparation of the recipe as a soft and light cake is proven for a banquet in 1526. The Spongarda is a flat cake made from a compact dough. The cake is made from flour, sugar, butter, honey, cinnamon, spices and a filling of almonds, nuts, grapes and candied fruit.

The Treccia d'oro is a cake. It consists of yeast dough with candied fruit and fruit. The Treccia d'oro dates from 1937/38 when it was presented by the confectioner Zironda at the Padova fair . He then opened his own pastry shop, where Vittorio Maccalli began as an apprentice. When the owner retired, Macalli continued manufacturing in his shop in Garibaldi Square in Crema. The Lombardy region recognizes the Treccia d'oro as a homemade product of the city of Crema.

In popular culture

The Oscar-winning film drama Call Me by Your Name (2017) by director Luca Guadagnino (who himself lives in Crema) was shot largely in Crema and the immediate vicinity. The success of the film brought a tourist boom, at least for a short time, to the less developed place compared to other areas of northern Italy.
