Giuseppe Severgnini OBE (born December 26, 1956 in Crema , Province of Cremona ), better known by his nickname Beppe , is an Italian journalist and writer .

Life

Severgnini first attended high school in Crema and made the classic Abitur in 1975. He then took up a law degree at the University of Pavia , which he completed with a thesis on international law . After an internship in Brussels in the EU administration, which at that time was still called the EEC , he worked at the age of 27 in Indro Montanelli's “ Il Giornale ” newspaper , writing articles as a correspondent from London .

In the years of the so-called Wende , the crisis of the communist governments, Giuseppe Severgnini worked as a special envoy from various Eastern countries, including Russia and the People's Republic of China . After leaving Il Giornale and following Indro Montanelli into the editorial office of La Voce , he moved to Washington, DC, USA . At the end of this experience with La Voce , he started at Corriere della Sera , where he is still a columnist and article writer.

Since 1998 he has maintained the Italians column in Corriere ; He also writes for Gazzetta dello Sport and was a correspondent from Italy for The Economist from 1996 to 2003. In addition to his writing, Severgnini also works on the radio . In 2000 he hosted the program Inglese perfetto, naturalmente for Radiodue and took part in the program Atlantis on an irregular basis . In 2003 he inaugurated the program L'utopista for Radio 24 . In 1993 he published the text Italiani con valigia , which was initially intended to be a diary of his experiences as a special envoy, especially in the Eastern countries, but later became a lengthy study of the behavior of his compatriots on the road and abroad. Un italiano in America (1995) tries to explain the culture of the USA to those who live there as foreigners, especially as Italians. In Italiani si diventa , published in 1998, Severgnini reports on his childhood and youth by linking his biography with the social history of Italy.

The Manuale dell'imperfetto viaggiatore (2000), the Manuale dell'uomo domestico (2002) and the Manuale dell'imperfetto sportivo (2003) contain reports and stories about his professional life as a journalist. His enthusiasm for the Inter Milan soccer team led him to publish two books about his favorite team: Interismi (2002) and Altri interismi (2003). In 2005 La testa degli italiani was published, an attempt to explain the peculiarities of Italians to foreigners, but also to hold up a mirror to his compatriots.
