The Bordeaux wine region

The Côtes de Bourg wine-growing region is located on the orographic right bank of the Gironde and is part of the Bordeaux wine-growing region in France . After the town of Bourg named appellation is located about 35 km north-east of the city Bordeaux completely within the department Gironde . On the opposite side of the Gironde river is the world-famous Appelation Margaux . In the north, the region, also known as Bourgeais, borders the Côtes de Blaye (also known as Blayais) wine-growing region . The wine-growing area has around 3,875 hectares of vineyards, which are spread across the 15 municipalities of Bayon , Bourg , Comps , Gauriac , Lansac , Mombrier , Prignac et Marcamps , Pugnac , Saint-Ciers de Canesse , Saint-Seurin de Bourg , Saint-Trojan , Samonac , Tauriac , Teuillac and Villeneuve . The vineyard area corresponds to approx. 83% of the potentially permitted cultivation area. The vineyards are worked by about 550 winemakers; Of these, around 250 winegrowers are affiliated with the 4 local winegrowers' cooperatives (in Gauriac / Lansac / Pugnac / Bourg-Tauriac). The other 300 vintners market their products themselves. The average size of a self-marketing winery is around 10 hectares.

Since September 11, 1936 , the area has had the status of an Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée (AOC for short) for red wine ; this has been the case for white wine since May 14, 1941 . In contrast to other areas of the Bordelais, the appellation is largely frost and hail-free. The amount of precipitation here is also lower than in the Médoc opposite . The soils, on the other hand, are very heterogeneous, so that the term terroir used in France hardly applies here.

In the past the wines were also known under the names Bourgeais , Bourgeois or Bourquais . From here, Bordeaux wine was exported to other countries very early; the area has always been rated as the Médoc's little sister. Even today, 85% of the wines in France are drunk themselves. The rest is mainly exported to the European market.

  • Of the approximately 3875 hectares of vineyards, 3850 hectares are planted with red grape varieties , in which the Merlot dominates. Cabernet Franc (share 6%), Cabernet Sauvignon (share 21%), Malbec (share 6%) and Merlot (share 67%) are permitted as red grape varieties . Around 226,000 hectoliters of wine are pressed each year. The red wines have a beautiful color and a strong tannin structure . The wines, which are mainly matured in barriques , should therefore be stored for a few years before consumption. The drinking temperature is 16-17 ° C.
  • The small stock of white grape varieties is divided into the varieties Colombard (share 23%), Muscadelle (share 8%), Sauvignon Blanc (share 46%) and Sémillon (share 23%). Merlot Blanc is also permitted , but it hardly plays a role. The annual production is around 1,200 hectoliters of white wine. The drinking temperature is 10–12 ° C.
