In the 19th and early 20th centuries, the place always had between about 1,000 and 1,250 inhabitants. As a result of the phylloxera crisis in viticulture and the mechanization of agriculture , the number of inhabitants then fell continuously to the lows in the 1940s and 1950s. The proximity to the city of Bordeaux and the significantly lower property prices in the country have led to a slight increase again since then.
economy
In the past, agriculture was primarily run for self-sufficiency , which also included viticulture until the beginning of the 20th century, but which was temporarily completely abandoned after the phylloxera crisis . Today, the municipality, which belongs to the Côtes de Bourg wine-growing region , is again producing a small amount of wine, which is marketed through the appellations Crémant de Bordeaux , Bordeaux supérieur , Bordeaux and Côtes de Bourg, Bourg et Bourgeais .
history
The dispute over Aquitaine triggered the Hundred Years War (1337–1453) between France and England in the 14th century .
Attractions
- The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Étienne was built in the 12th century on the site of an older church, some columns and capitals of which were reused as spoilage in the facade. The facade was originally only two-story; the bell gable ( clocher mur ) is a later ingredient. On the one hand, the triumphal arch scheme in the lower zone with a central portal and two lateral dazzling portals , the arch fields of which show figurative motifs (rider (?) And Agnus Dei ) should be emphasized on the one hand ; on the other hand, the richly decorated row of blind arcades with figural capitals in the upper facade level should be mentioned, one of which is the martyrdom ( stoning ) of St. Stephen shows. The facade ends with a partially figurative console frieze - one of the consoles shows an acrobat . The building, which was redesigned in the 19th century, was recognized as a Monument historique in 2005 .
- In the municipality there are three mansions ( châteaux ) from the 18th century ( Labarde , Macô and Pia ).
