Marsica
The Marsica is a regional union of 37 municipalities in the inner Abruzzo in the province of L'Aquila in Italy . Its population around the main town of Avezzano sees itself as descendants of the Italian people of the Martians .
In the middle of the area was formerly the Fucin lake ( Lago Fucino ), which was drained in 1877, as well as parks and nature reserves. Avezzano is the most populous city in the area.

Nature and protected areas
The mountains in the area are covered by beech forests.
Numerous nature parks and nature reserves characterize the region. The following protected areas extend in whole or in part to the Marsica area: in the south the Abruzzo, Latium and Molise National Park , in the southwest Riserva naturale guidata Zompo lo Schioppo , in the east Parco regional naturale del Sirente - Velino , in the northeast Riserva naturale Monte Velino , and to the west Riserva naturale guidata Monte Salviano .
A special feature is the occurrence of the Martian brown bear ( Ursus arctos marsicanus ), an endemic bear species that only occurs in a small area .
Customs
According to ancient reports, the warlike Martians (1st millennium BC) were snake worshipers, snake charmers and magicians. This tradition lives on in the now Christian snake procession in the small mountain village of Cocullo in honor of St. Dominic of Sora .
