Carsoli is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 5,245 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of L'Aquila in Abruzzo . In Carsoli, there is a particularly protected cave system with the Riserva naturale speciale delle Grotte di Pietrasecca .

geography

The municipality is located about 38.5 kilometers southwest of L'Aquila and about 53 kilometers east-northeast of Rome . Carsoli borders the province of Rieti and the metropolitan city of Rome . The districts of Colli di Monte Bove, Montesabinese, Pietrasecca, Poggio Cinolfo, Tufo (Basso and Alto) di Carsoli, Villetta and Villa Romana belong to the municipality .

history

Due to its location on Via Valeria, the place gained a certain importance early on. The place is also mentioned as Carseoli in the Historia gentis Langobardorum .

Carsoli is on the A24 motorway from Rome to L'Aquila and on towards Teramo and the Adriatic Sea . At the same time, Strada Statale 5 leads Via Tiburtina Valeria from Rome to Avezzano . On the Rome- Sulmona - Pescara railway line, there are train stations in Carsoli and in the Colli di Monte Bove district. At Carsoli there is a small airfield ( Aviosuperficie ) for general aviation .
