Carsoli Castle

The Castello di Carsoli is the ruin of a hilltop castle on the summit of Colle Sant'Angelo above the Italian municipality of Carsoli in the province of L'Aquila .

history

The medieval settlement emerged as a clustered village around the church of Santa Maria in Cellis , not far from the remains of the Roman settlement Carsioli (or Carseoli ), which dates from the beginning of the 4th century BC. And was at Civita ( Oricola ). The settlement was destroyed by the Saracens in the 10th century and between 996 and 1000 Count Rainaldo dei Marsi had a watchtower built, which was later extended by building a wall according to the scheme of the enclosed castle; the last extension was that of the Angioini of 1293.

The area of Carsoli and the church of Santa Maria in Cellis were donated by Count Rainaldo to the monastery in Subiaco . Successively the castle belonged to the Counts Albe , then the Barons of Tagliacozzo , then the Orsinis and the Colonnas until 1806 when feudal rule was abolished. In 2013 ownership of the castle ruins was transferred from the De Leoni family to the Carsoli community.

description

The castle ruins are located at a strategically important point at the confluence of the Mura stream in the Turano . From there you can control the Piana del Cavaliere and the Castello di Oricola in the south, the Mura valley in the north and the valley in the east that leads to the pass over Monte Bovo .

The layout of the castle is in the shape of a folded L. The oldest part is the tower, which is located in the corner between the two enclosure walls. Two more towers with rectangular ground plans can be found at the ends of the two flanks of the enclosure.

The castle is in a ruinous state with two walls in the southeast and northeast flanking the access ramp, which is largely in ruins.
