The Turano (Latin Tolenus ) is a river in central Italy , in the regions of Abruzzo and Latium . It is a left tributary of the Velino , into which it flows at Rieti .

It rises on Monte Bove in the municipality of Carsoli and is 70 km long. It flows through the Sabine Mountains .

From 1935 to 1938 the Lago del Turano was dammed. The most fertile soils in the region disappeared, leading to an exodus of the population. Today, however, the lake plays an important role in tourism, which has become the most important industry.
