The Velino is a river in central Italy , in the regions of Latium ( Province of Rieti ) and Umbria ( Province of Terni ). It is a left tributary of the Nera , into which it flows at Terni .
course
It rises on Monte Pozzoni in the municipality of Cittareale and is 90 km long. To the north of Antrodoco it flows through the Gole del Velino gorge , and then crosses the Velino valley to Rieti. At Rieti it meets its left tributaries Salto (south of Rieti) and Turano (north of Rieti) and in the city center on the Ponte Romano (German: Roman bridge ). After the municipality of Colli sul Velino, it changes from the province of Rieti to the province of Terni and shortly thereafter receives the outflows of the lake Lago di Piediluco , which enter here on the right. Shortly before it flows into the Nera, the river plunges 165 meters deep over the Cascata delle Marmore (English: marble waterfall) into the Valnerina and flows into the Nera from the left.
