Castel Sant'Angelo is an Italian municipality in the province of Rieti in the Lazio region with 1203 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). The place is about 80 kilometers northeast of Rome .
geography
The place is located in the Velino valley on Via Salaria , surrounded by the mountains of the Reatine Abruzzo . He is a member of the Comunità Montana del Velino .
The municipality consists of the districts Canetra, Castel Sant'Angelo, Cotilia Terme, Mozza, Pagliara, Paterno, Pie di Castello, Piedimozza, Ponte Alto, Ponte Basso, Ponte Santa Margherita, Vasche, Ville and Ville Ornaro.
history
The place dates back to the Middle Ages. Until 1530 it belonged to the family of the Counts Mareri, who were concentrated in the southern landscape of the Cicolano . Afterwards, Emperor Charles V gave the area around Castel Sant'Angelo as a dowry to his illegitimate daughter Margarethe , who had married the future Duke Ottavio Farnese of Parma and Piacenza in 1538 . The Madama d'Austria , as it was called here, was cereal and paper mills built in the valley. After her death in 1586, the area came back under the direct rule of the Kings of Naples . It has belonged to the Rieti Province since 1923.

Paolo Anibaldi (Citizen List Castel Sant'Angelo il futuro ) was elected mayor for the second time in June 2009.
Festivals
- The feast of the patron saint San Biagio is celebrated on the first Sunday in February .
- In the first two weeks of July, a number of events, exhibitions and conferences are held under the name Acqua e Arte ("Water and Art").
Attractions
- All that remains of the medieval castle is a mighty tower, which is the symbol of the place and was also included in the coat of arms. Beatrice Cenci found shelter in the castle for a short time on her escape from Petrella Salto .
- The Romanesque church of San Rocco in the district of Vasche was redesigned during the period when the valley belonged to Madama d'Austria.
- The parish church of San Biagio in the Canetra district has an elegant portal from 1564.
Terme di Cotilia
Castel Sant'Angelo includes the spa town of Terme di Cotilia, west of the Paterno district on Via Salaria, which was known as Aquae Cutiliae in ancient times . The Cottorella and Cotilia springs are used here for drinking cures. Behind the modern spa facilities one can still find considerable remains of the ancient thermal baths, especially a large swimming pool, as well as the villa that belonged to the Roman emperors Titus and Vespasian , who both died here in their place of birth.
