Monteleone Sabino is a municipality with 1201 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio .

geography

Monteleone is 61 km northeast of Rome and 25 km south of Rieti . It is located in the Sabine Mountains between the Turano and Farfa valleys . The district of Ginestra Sabina belongs to the municipality. The municipality extends over an altitude difference of 264 to 900 m slm Monteleone is a member of the Comunità Montana dei Monti Sabini .

The community is located in earthquake zone 2 (medium risk).

The neighboring municipalities are Frasso Sabino , Poggio Moiano , Poggio San Lorenzo , Rocca Sinibalda and Torricella in Sabina .

From the 4th century BC A temple of the Sabines is known to which Feronia was dedicated. With the construction of the Via Salaria and the incorporation into the Roman Empire, the place Trebula Mutuesca was created. Today's place, which was first mentioned in 943 as Leonem Montanianum , arose in the Middle Ages to the west of the Roman city .

On April 24, 1944, 11 innocent citizens were killed in a massacre by the German Wehrmacht .
