history

Catino was founded by the Lombards at the end of the 7th century to secure the border of the Duchy of Spoleto . In the Middle Ages it developed into an independent principality. A castle on the nearby Monte Moricone, today Poggio Catino, was first mentioned in 1072. In the 12th century, the two places Catino and Poggio Catino were able to establish themselves together as a Free Commune, which, however, was always under the supervision of a nobleman. 1614-1816 the Olgiati exercised the rule. In 1853 Poggio Catino, with Catino as a district, became an independent municipality and has belonged to the province of Rieti since 1927.
