Borgo Velino is an Italian commune in the province of Rieti in the Lazio region with 947 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 96 km northeast of Rome and 22 km east of Rieti .

geography

Borgo Velino is located in the Velino valley surrounded by the mountains of the Reatine Abruzzo . The hamlet of Collerinaldo belongs to the municipality and lies above the valley on the slope of Monte Nuria (1888 m).

Borgo Velino is a member of the Comunità Montana del Velino .

The neighboring towns are Antrodoco , Castel Sant'Angelo , Cittaducale , Fiamignano , Micigliano and Petrella Salto .

Borgo Velino is located on Via Salaria SS 4 which leads from Rome via Ascoli Piceno to the Adriatic coast near Porto d'Ascoli . The municipality is also located on the Terni - Sulmona railway line with the Antrodoco - Borgo Velino train station .

history

The settlement of the Sabine Viarium already existed in pre-Roman times on the right, hilly bank of the Velino . On the left bank of the river, the inhabitants of Forca Pretula, which had been destroyed by Cittaducale , founded the Borghetto settlement directly on Via Salaria in the 14th century , to which the inhabitants of Viarium also moved over time. Borghetto belonged to Cittaducale and with this to the Kingdom of Naples until the 19th century . In 1865, Borghetto was renamed Borgo Velino. It has belonged to the Rieti Province since 1923.
