Fara in Sabina is a municipality with 13,956 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio .

geography

Fara is 48 km north of Rome and 37 km south of Rieti . The old town is located on Monte Buzio, a hill in the Sabine Mountains above the Tiber Valley. It is a member of the Comunità Montana Sabina . The municipal area is bordered to the north and west by the Farfa and Tiber rivers.

The districts are Borgo Quinzio, Canneto Sabino, Coltodino, Corese Terra, Fara, Farfa, Passo Corese, Pomonte, Prime Case and Talocci. Passo Corese in the Tiber Valley, with the Fara train station, is by far the largest district.

The municipality extends over a height of 23 to 600 m slm

The community is located in earthquake zone 2 (medium risk).

The neighboring towns are Castelnuovo di Farfa , Montelibretti ( RM ), Montopoli di Sabina , Nerola (RM), Toffia .

Fara is 18 km from the Roma Nord exit of the A1 Autostrada del Sole motorway from Rome to Milan . Its station on the regional line FR1 from Rome-Fiumicino Airport via Rome-Tiburtina to Orte , is 12 km from the center in the Passo Corese district.

history

Fara is located in the center of the ancient Sabine settlement area . One of their most important cities, Cures , was near the current district of Talocci.

Today's Fara was founded by the Lombards in the 6th century . The name Fara is derived from the Longobard word fâra ("clan").

Vincenzo Mazzeo ( L'Unione ) was elected mayor in May 2006. His center-left alliance also has the majority in the municipal council with 13 out of 20 seats.

  • In the municipality, the important is the Benedictine - monastery Farfa , which was founded in the 6th century and counted in the Middle Ages as an imperial abbey of the richest and most influential monasteries in Europe. The abbey was secularized in 1860/61 and declared an Italian national monument in 1928 . It has been a Benedictine monastery again since 1919/20 .
  • Part of the forum has been excavated from the ancient city of Cures , hometown of Numa Pompilius .
  • From Castello di Postmontem from the 10th century only remained Torre Baccelli .
