Poggio Nativo is 55 km northeast of Rome and 29 km south of Rieti . It is located in the Sabine Mountains above the Farfa Valley . The municipality extends from 194 to 494 m slm

The districts Casali di Poggio Nativo, which has by far the most inhabitants, and Monte Santa Maria belong to the municipality.

Poggio Nativo was founded in the 10th century under the name Podium Donadei . Pope Urban VIII appointed Federico Savelli , a troop commander in the army of Emperor Ferdinand III around 1635 . during the late Thirty Years War and Lieutenant General in the Papal Army, Duke of Poggio Nativo.
