Cittareale is a municipality in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio with 426 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
geography
Cittareale is 125 km northeast of Rome and 52 km northeast of Rieti . It is located above the Velino valley , which rises in the municipality, surrounded by the mountains of the Reatine Abruzzo , at the foot of Monte Cambio (2084 m). The municipality extends over a height of 757 to 1,825 m slm
The municipality includes the districts of Ara dei Colli, Bricca, Cagnerone, Ca Jenco, Cesetta, Collenasso, Collicelle, Conca, Folcara, Le Rose, Marianitto, Matrecciano, Mola Coletta, Pallottini, Santa Croce, Santa Giusta, Sacco, Scanzano, Sorecone, Trimezzo, Vetozza and Vezzano.
The community is located in earthquake zone 1 (highly endangered).
Cittareale is a member of the Comunità Montana del Velino .
The neighboring towns are Accumoli , Amatrice , Borbona , Cascia ( PG ), Leonessa , Montereale ( AQ ), Norcia (PG) and Posta .

history
The town of Falacrinae , founded by the Sabines , was located in the municipality and has been excavated in the suburb of Colicelle since 2005 under the direction of Giovanna Alvino from the Lazio Monument Authority.
The core of today's community is said to have been founded in 1261 by Manfred von Staufen . After the fall of the Hohenstaufen the place came to the Kingdom of Naples .
