Casperia is a municipality in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio with 1213 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 63 km north of Rome and 37 km southwest of Rieti .

The place was called Aspra Sabina until 1947 .

geography

Casperia is located on a hill in the Sabine Mountains . The districts of Paranzano, Santa Maria in Legarano and San Vito belong to the municipality.

Casperia is a member of the Comunità Montana Sabina . The Bandiera Arancione carries a quality seal in the field of tourism and the environment from the TCI .

The neighboring towns are Cantalupo in Sabina , Contigliano , Montasola , Rieti , Roccantica , Selci and Torri in Sabina .

history

According to tradition, ancient Casperia was the oldest town of the Sabines , which was probably in the area of ​​the present municipality. The medieval town of Aspra was first mentioned in writing in 1109. In 1189 he declared himself a Free Commune. In 1278 Aspra became a vassal of the Papal States and from 1376 belonged to the noble Savelli family . In 1592 he came back under the direct rule of the Vatican, which remained until the Italian unification in 1870.
