John Frederick Dewey

John Frederick Dewey (* 1937) is a British structural geologist and a leading proponent of the theory of plate tectonics , which among other things builds on scientific work that he carried out in the 1960s and 1970s. He is an authority on the formation and development of mountain ranges.

Dewey was educated at Bancroft's School in London and studied at Queen Mary and Westfield College and Imperial College at the University of London , where he obtained a B.Sc. and PhD in geology . After a period as a lecturer at the University of Manchester (1960-64), the University of Cambridge (1964-70) and the Memorial University of Newfoundland (1971) Dewey was appointed professor of geology at New York State University in Albany . In this position he published a number of classic papers on the Appalachians in Newfoundland and the Scottish and Irish Caledonids . Later, his work focused on developing a model of the evolution and orogenetic history of the Himalayas .

He returned to England in 1982 to accept a position as professor in the Department of Geology at the University of Durham for four years . Like some of his predecessors in this position, such as LR Wager , Dewey was appointed to the University of Oxford in 1986 , where he taught until his retirement in 2000. He then returned to the United States to continue to work as a professor of geology at the University of California, Davis .

John Dewey was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) in London in 1985 and received numerous honors and awards, most notably the Penrose Medal of the Geological Society of America in 1992 and the Wollaston Medal in 1999 , the highest award of the Geological Society of London . He is a member of the Royal Astronomical Society (1985), the Academia Europaea (1990), the National Academy of Sciences (1997) and the Royal Irish Academy (2008).
