Roccantica is 68 km north of Rome and 35 km southwest of Rieti . It is located in the Hohe Sabina , the mountainous region between Rieti and the valley of the Tiber . The town center lies on the slope of Monte Pizzuto, which, at 1,288 m slm, forms the highest elevation in the municipality. The lowest point is 98 m slm

The community is located in earthquake zone 2 (medium risk).

Roccantica is a member of the Comunità Montana Sabina IV Zona .

The neighboring towns are Cantalupo in Sabina , Casperia , Monte San Giovanni in Sabina , Poggio Catino , Rieti and Salisano .

history

Ascent to the castle

Roccantica was first mentioned in 792 as a Fundus Antiquum in a document from Farfa Abbey , which it was in possession of from 840 onwards. In 1060 the Roccolani defended Pope Nicholas II , who had holed up in the castle, successfully against the Crescentians . From 1477 to 1728 the place belonged to the noble Odescalchi family . After that it was directly subordinate to the Holy See . In 1860 it became part of the Kingdom of Italy . It has belonged to the Rieti Province since 1927.

Riccardo Bianchini (list of citizens) was elected mayor in June 2009. He replaced Loretta Sabatini, who was no longer running.

Attractions

The ruins of the Torre Nicolò II, part of the former castle, commemorate the Pope who sought refuge here.
