history
Poggio Mirteto is located in the center of the ancient Sabine settlement area . In Roman antiquity, some villas and country estates were built in the municipality, but no large settlements. Only in the 12th century did the rural population come together in fortified places. The Abbey Farfa built on the hill of Poggio Mirteto a castle to protect its sphere of influence. During the Renaissance, the time when Alessandro Farnese was Abbot in Farfa, the place experienced a heyday. The magnificent Porta Farnese still bears witness to this today. In 1841 Poggio Mirteto became a bishopric and is now the seat of the diocese of Sabina-Poggio Mirteto
