Eric Anthony Person (born May 2, 1963 in St. Louis ) is an American creative jazz saxophonist ( soprano and alto saxophone ) who is also active as a composer.

Live and act

Person, son of saxophonist Thomas Person, began playing the saxophone at the age of seven; he received first lessons from his father and in high school. He studied at his hometown Conservatory, with Dave Liebman and with John Purcell . In 1982 he moved to New York City , where he played in the Big Band of John Hicks , from 1984 to 1987 in the "Decoding Society" of Ronald Shannon Jackson , but also with Chico Hamilton (until 1994). Over the next several years he worked with Vernon Reid , McCoy Tyner , Woody Shaw , Onaje Allan Gumbs , David Murray and Jackie McLean . In 1993 he succeeded James Spaulding in the World Saxophone Quartet ; between 1994 and 1998 he played with Dave Holland . In the mid-1990s he founded his group "Meta-Four" and began a series of solo appearances; he also played in a duo with Michael Carvin and led a band with Michiel Borstlap . He also worked on the one hand for Ben Harper , Ofra Haza and Bootsy Collins , on the other hand for Quincy Jones , Joe Chambers , Chris Joris and Ronnie Burrage . He released his debut album in 1993. Since 1999 he has published on his own label. In 2008 he founded the band "Metamorphosis", with whom he moves between electronic music and funk .

As a composer, person works with new formal models.

Honourings and prices

In 1979 he received an Outstanding Musician Award from Missouri Southern State University . As a soprano saxophonist, he led the Readers' Poll of Downbeat between 1992 and 1995.
