Cantalupo in Sabina is a municipality with 1652 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Rieti in the Italian region of Lazio .
geography
Cantalupo is 58 km north of Rome and 42 km southwest of Rieti . It is located in the Lower Sabina , the hill country above the Tiber valley . The old town center is at the highest point in the municipality. The municipality extends over a height of 75 to 297 m slm
The community is located in earthquake zone 2 (medium risk).
The districts of Piedimordenti, Terra and Vallemare belong to the municipality.
The neighboring towns are Casperia , Forano , Poggio Catino , Roccantica , Selci and Torri in Sabina .

Cantalupo is on the strada stadale SS 313 , which leads from the Roma Nord motorway exit on the A1 Autostrada del Sole to Terni . The nearest train station is in Poggio Mirteto Scalo on the FR1 regional line , 8 km from the town center.
history
In the Cantalupo area there were some villae rusticae in antiquity . During the Migration Period , the population fled to places that were easier to defend. They gathered around the Castrum Cantalupi , which was first mentioned in writing in 1037. Until 1861 the place belonged successively to the noble families of Savelli , Cesi , Lante , Simonetti and Camuccini . It then became part of the Kingdom of Italy and has belonged to the province of Rieti since 1927.

A black wolf with a blue star on a silver shield. It is a talking coat of arms , as Canta Lupo means something like the wolf that sings (howls) .
Attractions
The Palazzo Camuccini Cesi was built over the Savelli Castle during the Renaissance. Giovanni Battista Camuccini, who acquired the palace, set up a museum there for the work of his father Vincenzo Camuccini . In addition, other Italian masters such as Caravaggio (Christ on the pillar) are shown in the museum . Currently (2010) the museum is closed for restoration .
Culinary specialties
The cantaloupe melon is named after Cantalupo, and was first grown in Europe from seeds from Armenia in the Camuccini Park in 1700.
