Colle di Tora is an Italian commune in the province of Rieti in the Lazio region with 358 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 73 km northeast of Rome and 29 km southeast of Rieti .

geography

Colle di Tora is located on a peninsula in the Lago del Turano reservoir , through which the Turano flows. It is a member of the Comunità Montana del Turano .

The neighboring towns are Castel di Tora , Poggio Moiano , Pozzaglia Sabina and Rocca Sinibalda .

history

In the 10th century the Turano valley was devastated by the Saracens . Presumably surviving residents founded Colle di Tora on an easily defended ledge above the Turano.

It belonged to Farfa Abbey in the 11th century before it became part of the Brancaleoni family in the 13th century . In the 16th century it was bought by the Orsini family , who sold the place to Marcantonio Borghese in 1634 for 43,000 scudi .

Until 1864 the place was called Collepiccolo and was then renamed after the ancient city of Torah of the Sabines (supposedly) located here .
