history
The area of the municipality has been populated since ancient times. However, these were scattered homesteads. Only with the threat from the Saracens from the 9th century onwards did the population concentrate in more easily defended towns. Here first in today's district of Capradosso, later also in Petrella and Staffoli. From the 12th century, the area came under the rule of the Mareri family, from which the well-known abbess Philippa Mareri emerged , who founded a Clarissin monastery in the hamlet of Borgo San Pietro. The Mareri, who were on the side of the Staufer, lost their property in the Salto Valley to Charles of Anjou when Konradin was captured in 1268 . Their castle in Mareri was destroyed. In 1305 Francesco II Mareri was able to regain a large part of the family property. The territory remained part of the Kingdom of Naples . The Mareri residence was moved to Petrella. The last princess Mareri, the widowed Maria Costanza, finally sold the property to Charles V in 1532 , who in turn gave the area to Pompeo Colonna . From 1595 onwards, Francesco Cenci, guest of Marzio Colonna, lived with his family at the castle and was killed there in 1598 by his daughter Beatrice and her brothers. An act that was processed in many operas and literary works.
After the municipality of Petrella was sidelined for a long time, it has been experiencing a boom again for several years thanks to tourism.
