Amatrice [ amaˈtri: tʃe ] is an Italian commune in the province of Rieti in the Lazio region with 2381 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).

Location of Amatrice in the province of Rieti

Amatrice is 138 km northeast of Rome and 63 km north of Rieti . The place is in the upper valley of the Tronto , on the Via Salaria at the foot of the Monti della Laga . In the area of ​​the municipality, to which about 70 small hamlets belong, lies the summit of Monte Gorzano ( 2458  m slm ), the highest mountain in Lazio. Below the center, which is on a rock spur, lies the Lago di Scandarello, a reservoir. The municipality extends over a height of 750  m slm to 2458  m slm

The neighboring municipalities are clockwise Accumoli , Valle Castellana ( TE ), Rocca Santa Maria [TE], Cortino [TE], Crognaleto [TE], Campotosto ( AQ ), Montereale (AQ) and Cittareale . The municipality borders the regions of Umbria , Marche and Abruzzo .

Amatrice is a member of the Comunità Montana del Velino and, since 2015, the association I borghi più belli d'Italia (The most beautiful places in Italy).

The municipality has been part of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park since 1991 .

The community is located in earthquake zone 1 (highly endangered). The Apennine region in Italy is crossed by two plate boundaries . Amatrice was therefore frequently hit by earthquakes. In 1639, 1672, 1703 and 1737 the place was badly damaged. The earthquake on August 24, 2016 also caused severe damage and claimed a total of at least 290 lives in Amatrice and in other communities. The epicenter was 10 km north of Amatrice.

The main road that crosses the municipality is Strada Statale 4 Via Salaria from Rome to San Benedetto del Tronto on the Adriatic Sea . From here the Strada Regionale 260 Picente branches off, which crosses the old town of Amatrice and leads to L'Aquila .

history

Prehistory and the Middle Ages

The area of ​​Amatrice has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Various districts were first mentioned in the 11th century.

In the early Middle Ages the region belonged to the Duchy of Spoleto , and from the 13th century to the Kingdom of Naples . In the 14th and 15th centuries, the city lived in constant feud with other cities and castles in the surrounding area. In the 18th century the town became the property of the Farnese family .

Modern times

From 1861 to 1927 the city belonged to the province of Abruzzo Ulteriore , after which it came to the province of Rieti.

From 1911 to 2011, the community lost around three quarters of its residents through emigration.

Earthquakes in 2016 and 2017

Amatrice after the devastating earthquake on September 1st, 2016

On August 24, 2016, Amatrice was hit by a severe earthquake . A total of almost 300 people died in the Amatrice area, and large parts of the community were destroyed. The medieval tower - the Torre Civica - next to the church consecrated to St. Augustine initially stopped with cracks, but including its roof. The bell fell on its floor, the tower clock stopped at 3:38 a.m. and thus became a memorial for the catastrophe.

On October 4th, Pope Francis visited the place for consolation.

On the morning of October 30th there was another strong earthquake (M W = 6.5), which caused the top bell storey of the Torre Civica to collapse. This time there were some injured in the community.

On January 18, 2017, another series of earthquakes occurred with Amatrice as the epicenter , with a magnitude of up to 5.7. The remains of the Torre Civica collapsed .

politics

Sergio Pirozzi (Citizen List Viva Amatrice viva ) was elected mayor in June 2009 and confirmed in office in May 2014. His list of citizens also includes 7 of the 10 municipal councils. His predecessor Carlo Fedeli (2004–2009) did not stand for election.

Attractions

Until the earthquakes in 2016 and 2017, Amatrice had a well-preserved medieval center with city walls from the 13th century and six city gates, among others. a. the Porta Carbonara .

The Torre civica (13th century) had largely survived the earthquake of August 24th: the bell fell to the ground on the top floor, but the four pillars on this floor, connected by vaults, remained in position despite serious fractures and continued to support the roof in the form of a roof flat pyramid with cross at the point. However, due to the quake, the clock hands stopped at 3:38 a.m. The tower became a memorial to the destruction caused by the August earthquake. Its surroundings were cordoned off. The spaghetti all'amatriciana are known throughout Italy . The Sagra degli Spaghetti all'amatriciana is celebrated on the last weekend in August. However, it was canceled after the earthquake in August 2016.
