Magliano Sabina is 69 km north of the provincial capital Rome , 55 km west of the provincial capital Rieti and 38 km southwest of Terni . It is the westernmost municipality in the province of Rieti and is located in the Sabine Mountains above the Tiber valley on the border with Umbria . The municipal area extends from the Tiber to the hilly landscape of the Sabina over an altitude difference of 31 to 277 m slm

The municipality is located in earthquake zone 2 (medium risk) and in the climatic classification of Italian municipalities in zone D, 1 769 GR / G.

The municipality includes the districts (Frazioni) Beradelli (240 m, approx. 200 inhabitants), Chiorano (136 m, approx. 50 inhabitants), Colle Micotti (275 m, approx. 30 inhabitants), Foglia (85 m, approx. 50 Inhabitants), Giglio (200 m, approx. 30 inhabitants), Madonna degli Angeli (223 m, approx. 270 inhabitants) and Mezzamora (223 m, approx. 25 inhabitants). The main town Magliano Sabina has approx. 2000 inhabitants.

The neighboring municipalities are Calvi dell'Umbria ( TR ), Civita Castellana ( VT ), Collevecchio , Gallese (VT), Montebuono , Orte (VT) and Otricoli (TR).

history

According to legend, the place name comes from Titus Manlius Torquatus . The place was first documented in the year 867. The place was a feudal system (feudo) of the Farfa monastery and then became a free community (libero comune). In 1311 the place submitted to the protection of Rome and was declared a city in 1495.

The Duomo di Magliano Sabina (Chiesa di San Liberatore, Cattedrale dei Sabini)
  • Duomo di Magliano Sabina (also called Chiesa di San Liberatore and Cattedrale dei Sabini ), church in the town center, consecrated in 1498. Was renewed in 1735. Contains a panel painting ( Incoronazione della Vergine with the Predella Miracolo della Madonna di Uliano ) by Rinaldo Jacovetti (Rinaldo da Calvi).
  • Chiesa di San Pietro , Romanesque church in the town center.
  • Chiesa di San Michele , church in the town center. Contains a custodia from the mid-15th century.
  • Santuario della Madonna delle Grazie , santuarium just outside the city walls, was built in 1800 over an older structure (Rocca). Inside there is a Romanesque crypt with frescoes from the 15th century.
  • Palazzo Comunale on Largo Francesco Crispi . Contains the Archivio storico del Comune di Magliano Sabina . Contains documents from the 14th century.
  • Palazzo Gori , contains the Museo Civico di Magliano Sabina (Archaeological Museum).
  • The fortified medieval village of Foglia is in a prominent position just above the A1 motorway.
