Orte is an Italian commune in the province of Viterbo in the Lazio region with 9449 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 79 kilometers north of Rome .

Orte lies in the valley of the Tiber .

history

The community goes back to an Etruscan city, which was probably called Hurta . In Roman times the city was called Horta or Hortanum . In the extinct See of Hortanum going Titularbistum Hortanum back.

Orte is located on the Autostrada del Sole , on European routes 35 and 45 and on expressway 204; it also has a train station on the Florence – Rome line . This was one of the 103 train stations that were managed and maintained by a subsidiary of Ferrovie dello Stato ( Centostazioni SpA) between 2001 and 2018 because of their importance . This company was incorporated into the FS operating division Rete Ferroviaria Italiana (RFI) in 2018 . Every day around 145 trains stop in Orte, including some InterCitys , but no high-speed trains of the Direttissima Florence – Rome .

There is a small airfield ( Aviosuperficie Ocria ) for general aviation in the town of Otricoli, located a little to the south-east but belonging to the Umbria region .
