Civita Castellana is an Italian city with 15,991 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Viterbo in the Lazio region . It is the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese .

geography

Civita Castellana is located 56 km north of Rome and 36 km southeast of Viterbo . The municipal area extends from the Tiber to the volcanic hill country of the foothills of the Monti Cimini . The old town is located on a rocky plateau that lies above the deeply carved valleys of the Rio Maggiore and the Rio Filetto, just before they flow into the Treja .

The districts Quartiere Catalano, Paolelli, Sassacci and Borghetto belong to the municipality.

The neighboring towns are Castel Sant'Elia , Collevecchio ( RI ), Corchiano , Fabrica di Roma , Faleria , Gallese , Magliano Sabina (RI), Ponzano Romano ( RM ), Sant'Oreste (RM).

Civita Castellana is 11 km from the Magliano Sabina exit of the A1 Autostrada del Sole motorway. The Strada statale 3 Via Flaminia leads east of the center by the districts Sassacci and Borghetto.

It has a train station in the Borghetto district on the Florence – Rome railway line . The stations Catalano, Civita Castellana and Pian Paradiso are on the Roma Flaminio – Viterbo railway line .

Civita Castellana was built on the site of the old Falerii Veteres , the capital of the Falisker , a tribe that belonged to the Etrurian League against Rome.

Gianluca Angelelli ( PD ) was elected Mayor in June 2009. His center-left alliance also has the majority in the municipal council with 13 out of 20 seats. He replaced Massimo Giampieri ( PdL ) (since 1999), who was no longer running.
