The Musée Rolin is a French city museum in Autun .

Building

The museum is named after Nicolas Rolin . In the 15th century he was chancellor, treasurer and advisor to the dukes of Burgundy . The politician had a splendid Hôtel particulier , a city residence built in his hometown of Autun opposite the Autun Cathedral , which also housed offices. The building, which closes around an inner courtyard, shows the forms of the late Gothic in its architecture , but the arcades of the inner courtyard already herald the approaching Renaissance . The building was nationalized in the 19th century and later converted into a museum.

Gislebertus: Lying Eva

The excavation finds from Gallo-Roman times, when Autun was one of the most important cities in Gaul, are particularly worth a visit. These include finds from the nearby Temple of Janus and the tomb of Couhard, statues of gods, mosaics, tombs and everyday objects.

The second focus of the collection are Romanesque sculptures from the former St. Lazare Cathedral . The most important piece in the museum is the temptation of Eve from the 12th century, a relief fragment that probably comes from the destroyed tympanum of the north transept portal of the cathedral and is counted among the works of the master Gislebertus . Furthermore, the museum from the cathedral keeps the fragments of the tomb of Lazarus, a stone Romanesque reliquary shrine with a group of figures depicting the raising of Lazarus by Christ.

Late Gothic Burgundian sculptures from Claus Sluter's circle such as the "Vièrge d'Autun" (Madonna of Autun) are also part of the inventory, as well as paintings from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, including the Christmas picture of Cardinal Rolin by the nameless Master von Moulins . There is also an extensive collection of paintings from the 17th to 19th centuries and a group of works by Maurice Denis .

Further exhibitions provide information about the customs and history of the Morvan , as well as local flora and fauna .
