Jean Rolin (* 1408 in Autun ; † June 22, 1483 in Auxerre ) was a French bishop and cardinal .

Life

Jean was a son of the Burgundian Chancellor Nicolas Rolin . He was appointed Bishop of Chalon-sur-Saône on May 29, 1431, Bishop of Autun on August 20, 1436 and by Pope Nicholas V on December 20, 1448 cardinal.

Like his father, he was intent on gaining wealth and power for himself and his family. He was seldom present in Autun, but often in ecclesiastical matters in Rome. He was one of the Burgundian nobles who saw the fall of the Burgundian duchy after the death of Charles the Bold in 1477. He was the confessor of the French Dauphin (heir to the throne) and King Louis XI.

Jean had the former Saint Nazaire Cathedral restored by Autun, a submerged structure that stood next to the current Saint Lazare Cathedral . In 1469 he had the bold late Gothic crossing tower built on the latter. He was a patron of the arts, his portrait can be seen on the Christmas picture of the Master of Moulins in the Musée Rolin in Autun as well as on the fragment of a mural from the St. Vincent chapel of the cathedral, which he donated in 1474.
