With Master of Moulins (French: maître de Moulins ) is Gothic painter called that in 1500 a three-part altar ( triptych ) for the Cathedral of Moulins has created. The master, whose name is not known for certain, may have come from Flanders and probably worked between 1470 and 1500. Most recently in France, its main client was the court of the Dukes of Bourbon , with their residence in Moulins .

His triptych by Moulins is regarded as a top work at the end of the late Gothic period. It is typical of the prominent portrayal of the founder in the picture at that time.

The Triptych of the Master of Moulins

The altar can be found in the treasury of Moulins Cathedral and consists of the three images:

  • Heilger Petrus recommends the founder Pierre II. De Bourbon . (Inside, right wing)
  • Mary in Glory and Angels . (Inside, middle panel)
  • Saint Anne recommends the founder Anne de Beaujeu and her daughter Suzanne . (Inside, left wing)

The outer sides (“weekday side”) of the two wings show an Annunciation (in grisaille ).

identification

The resolution of the Notnamens of the Master of Moulins is discussed by art historians.

Often the master is identified with the painter Jean Hay (or Jean Hey). A painter by the name of Maistre Je (h) an can be found in documents from the court in Moulins at that time. He is referred to in sources as the "Cardinal's painter" (i.e. Cardinal Charles II. De Bourbon , cf. his portrait of the Master of Moulins) and accompanied him on trips.

The name Jean Prévost is also discussed in professional circles , a painter and glass painter proven in Lyon, for all or at least parts of the work of the master of Moulin .

Other works by the Master of Moulins

A number of other works are attributed to the master of Moulins , including:

The portrayal of the cardinal in the picture corresponds to the description in a contract between the painter Pierre Spicre and the monastery of the Notre-Dame church in Beaune from 1474, in which the latter is commissioned with designs for tapestries in the church: "It should also be done my lord the cardinal praying with his hands closed, his cardinal's hat next to him and his dog in front of him, as it is in the picture in the chapel of St. Ligier in Beaune, which the named master made. " Apparently, Pierre Spicre's picture in the St. Ligier Chapel served the Master of Moulins as a model.

Two surviving panels from a reredos of the Conception of Mary:

  • Meeting at the Golden Gate (London, National Gallery)
  • Annunciation (Art Institute, Chicago)
