The diocese of Civita Castellana was founded in 990 by Pope John XV. and placed directly under the Holy See . The diocese of Orte was affiliated to the diocese of Civita Castellana on October 5, 1437 . On December 20, 1805, the diocese of Gallese was attached to the diocese of Civita Castellana and places .

The diocese of Nepi and Sutri was attached to the diocese of Civita Castellana, Orte and Gallese on February 11, 1986 . On February 16, 1991 the diocese of Civita Castellana, Orte, Gallese, Nepi and Sutri was renamed the Diocese of Civita Castellana .
