The village church Barkow is a church of the parish Barkow of the parish of Mecklenburg in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Northern Germany ( Northern Church ). It is located in the Barkow district of the Barkhagen community in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district .

history

Barkow was first mentioned in a document in 1274, the existence of a church has been documented since 1320. The older part of the current stone church was probably built in the middle of the 14th century. The nave was closed with a straight wooden beam ceiling. The east gable was decorated with pointed arches. In the 14th century, a wooden bell tower is covered with a bell. The bell is still there today. It has a diameter of approx. 1 m and bears the Latin inscription :

SUM SINE VOCE TAMEN - PRECOR EXAUDI DEUS AM
Even if without a voice, I ask: God hear us. Amen

In 1434 the roof structure was renewed, which was probably destroyed by fire. Gothic figures from the 15th century depicting John and Mary with the child were taken from a preacher's chair. During the Thirty Years War in 1636 the village and the church were sacked by the imperial troops. The pulpit dates from the first half of the 17th century. An extension of the nave with half-timbering towards the west was made in the 17th and 18th centuries. The two-storey tower with a pyramid helmet , also made of brick framework, replaced the wooden bell tower in 1786. The rectory was built in 1782. In 1785 a second bell was cast in Rostock. This is no longer there because it was melted down during the First World War . The organ with a three -part neo-Gothic prospect by Friedrich Friese III was built in 1887. In 1968 the Nussbücker company from Plau overhauled the organ. Renovation work is documented for 1828. In the 19th century, neo-Gothic pews were purchased, and in 1853 a new altarpiece with a picture by Gaston Lenthe depicting Christ with a chalice and bread.

From 1843 to 1875 the church was the place of activity of Heinrich Zander , the founder of ornithology in Mecklenburg.

Further renovations took place in 1952. The external staircase to the former manor gallery next to the sacristy was removed in 1995.

Collapse and rebuilding

On the evening of April 3, 2004, the entire roof of the nave collapsed unexpectedly. The interior was almost completely destroyed. Only the outer masonry and the tower remained and were secured. The local volunteer fire brigade carried out the first rescue and security work at the scene of the accident and started clean-up work together with the villagers. In the days that followed, up to 40 volunteers worked to remove the rubble and protect the existing structure. This included the altar , baptismal font and the organ. In May 2004 a support association for the reconstruction of the village church was founded, which in the following years actively collected donations and organized various activities such as benefit concerts in order to raise money for the reconstruction.

An architectural competition was launched for the reconstruction , which was won by the architects stadt + haus from Hamburg / Wismar. The aim of the architects was "to make the original field stone building recognizable and to visibly integrate its additions from 1786." This was achieved by inserting a new structure made of steel. The organ was moved to a different location to achieve better acoustics. The technical room, kitchenette and sanitary facilities were housed in the tower area. Air-to-heat pump heating was installed. Work began in October 2005 and the topping-out ceremony was held on December 15, 2005. The Mecklenburg Orgelbau company in Plau am See restored the organ in 2007, in doing so it was restored to its original timbre and a deep bass was added to the pedal. The organ was consecrated at Pentecost 2007. The church was consecrated again on Reformation Day 2007. In 2008, the reconstruction was awarded the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania State Building Prize.

In the summer of 2015, the items of furniture that had initially been stored also returned: the neo-Gothic altarpiece, carved figures and two warrior memorial plaques.

Staircase

An artistically designed railing has adorned the staircase to the churchyard since October 2015. Made by the metalworker Günter Söffky in Drönnewitz ( Demmin ), it shows the notation of the canon Praise and praise, you peoples, the Lord . The upper end of the handrail bears the symbol of the Evangelical Trumpet Service in Germany .
