The Roma Flaminio – Viterbo railway is a 105-kilometer, according to other information 102-kilometer, standard-gauge , electrically operated railway line that is used exclusively for public transport in the north of Rome .

history

Società Romana Ferrovie del Nord

The railway was built along the Via Flaminia on the route of the former Ferrovia delle Cave , a standard-gauge steam-powered material railway that transported building material from the brickworks and gravel pits on the Via Flaminia for the construction of the Prati district . It was built as a regional tram , privately financed, as a project of the Società Romana Ferrovie del Nord (SRFN), initially with a gauge of 1000 millimeters and was electrified with 6500 volts, 25  Hertz single-phase alternating current . As Roma Nord it started operations in 1906 from Rome to Civita Castellana . In 1913 the extension to Viterbo was opened. The Rome – Viterbo operation was known as the “ tramway ” (“ ferrotranvia ”). The driving time of around five hours for 104 kilometers was already perceived as too slow in the first few years of operation, so that the income barely covered the operating costs.

In 1932 the line was changed to standard gauge , partially straightened and opened as the Rome-Civita Castellana railway with a new tunnel line in the urban area between Piazzale Flaminio and Acqua Acetosa , which replaced the tram service in the streets of Rome. The railway was now operated as a railway that ends at Roma Flaminio station in Piazza del Popolo .

After the Second World War , suburban traffic was set up on the Rome (Flaminio) - Grottarossa route.

Metropolitana di Roma SpA

In 1970 Metropolitana di Roma SpA bought the railway line from SRFN.

ATAC

This was taken over by ATAC on January 1, 2010 . It is their longest route and has around 45,000 travelers per day. A S-Bahn -like transport is offered. It is to be modernized in order to expand this type of transport offer even further.
