The Emmelichthyidae are a family of perch relatives (Percomorphaceae). They live in the sea, especially in tropical and subtropical regions, in the Indo-Pacific , in the southern Pacific , in the eastern Atlantic and in the Caribbean . The adult fish are mostly close to the ground, at depths of 100 to 400 meters.

features

The jaws are toothless or almost toothless and can be strongly protruded. The maxillary is scaly and distally expanded. When the mouth is closed, the maxillary is not covered by the prorbital bone. The supramaxillary is well developed. The fish have seven gill trap rays . The dorsal fin is continuous. In the genus Erythrocles , the hard and soft-rayed part are separated by a deep indentation that extends down to the back, and in the case of plagiogenesis by a less deep indentation. At Emmelichthys , both fin parts are separated by a few individual hard rays. The caudal fin is forked. Both parts of the caudal fin can be folded together like scissors.

Fin formula : Dorsal XI – XIV / 9–12, Anale III / 9–11

The Emmelichthyidae are 9 to 72 centimeters long, depending on the species.
