The German Society for Railway History eV ( DGEG ) is an association that deals with the history of the railway and operates several railway museums. The goals of the association are

  • to arouse and cultivate interest in and understanding of the history of the railways in the context of the overall history,
  • to promote scientific studies in this field,
  • to preserve and maintain important cultural and technical monuments .

history

The association was founded on April 22nd, 1967 in Karlsruhe and is entered in the register of associations there. The founding member Joachim Hotz became the first president of the DGEG and remained so until 1980. After the closure of the depot in Bochum 's Dahlhausen district by the Federal Railroad on August 1, 1969, members of the association were largely able to restore it to the original state of the steam locomotive era, unless legal requirements determine otherwise. Since vehicle additions were imminent in 1972 and Dahlhausen was not yet fully receptive, the locomotive shed and the workshop building of the old Neustadt (Haardt) depot were rented. In 1981 the DGEG Railway Museum Neustadt / Weinstrasse emerged from this. Today the Würzburg Railway Museum is also operated by the DGEG.

Collections

The association owns the largest and most valuable collection of railway vehicles and utensils in Germany. That includes that

The DGEG also has a large library (in cooperation with the Dortmund University Library , the book inventory can be accessed via interlibrary loan at any public library in Germany) and an archive on the subject of railways in Witten . The collection of narrow-gauge vehicles, which was presented in the Viernheim depot of the Upper Rhine Railway Company until 1989 , was dissolved. The museum railway operation on the Jagsttalbahn had to be abandoned due to the line being closed.

organization

The DGEG currently has around 2000 members who also meet in member groups in some regions and cities and exchange their experiences, often reporting on trips in publicly accessible image lectures. The office is in Witten .
