Latera

Latera is an Italian commune in the province of Viterbo in the Lazio region with 798 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). It is located 116 kilometers northwest of Rome .

geography

Latera is located in the Monti Volsini above Lake Bolsena on the northern edge of the Conca di Latera, a depression resulting from volcanic activity. Erected on a hill sloping towards the south, the town center with the partially preserved wall has the character of a fortified settlement, a castello .

history

Latera is first mentioned in 1013. Like other communities in northern Tuscia, it was subordinate to different masters, such as the city of Orvieto and the prefect of Vico . In 1408 Pope Gregory XII appointed (1406–1415) Pietro Farnese from the Farnese family as papal vicar , and his descendants kept the place for around 250 years.

Pope Clement VIII (1592–1605) appointed Mario I Farnese Duke of Latera and Farnese in 1602 in gratitude for his military service. His son Francesco had four sons who successively succeeded him as dukes, including Pietro Francesco (ruled 1638–1665). The Duchy of Latera was not affected by the abolition of the Duchy of Castro , which belonged to the main line of the family. Cardinal Girolamo Farnese , the fourth son finally was the last Duke, 1668 Latera with his death at the Papal States fell back and later with its fall 1870 Kingdom of Italy came.
