Girolamo Farnese (born September 3, 1599 in Latera , † February 18, 1668 in Rome ) was an Italian cardinal and Duke of Latera.

He studied at the University of Parma under the protection of Ranuccio I Farnese and entered the Roman Curia during the pontificate of Paul V , where he held minor positions.

On July 11, 1639, he was appointed titular archbishop of Patras . He received episcopal ordination on July 26th of the same year by Bishop Giovanni Battista Scanaroli . From 1639 to 1643 he was apostolic nuncio in Switzerland , after which he returned to Rome as secretary of the Congregation for the Bishops . In 1650 he was appointed governor of Rome and in 1655 prefect of the Apostolic Palace and governor of Castel Gandolfo .

In the consistory of April 9, 1657, Pope Alexander VII raised him to cardinal in pectore . The publication took place on April 29, 1658 and on May 6 of the same year he received Sant'Agnese fuori le mura as titular church . From 1658 to 1662 he was papal legate in Bologna .

After the death of his brother Pietro, he became Duke of Latera in 1662. He issued many decrees in favor of the people of Latera, so that the Latera community organized a splendid burial for him when he died in 1668 and swore eternal allegiance to the Farnese as "vassals of Christ".

He took part in the conclave of 1667 , which Pope Clement IX. chose.

He died in Rome and was buried in the church of Il Gesù .
