Cosimo de Torres (* 1584 in Rome ; † May 1, 1642 ibid) was an Italian cardinal and archbishop .

Life

He was born in Rome in 1584 as the son of Marchese Giovanni de Torres and his wife Giulia Mattei from the Papareschi family.

Torres studied law at the University of Perugia and graduated in utroque iure . Upon graduation, he was assigned to the College of Apostolic Protonotaries under his uncle Cardinal Girolamo Mattei . From 1608 he served as a trainee lawyer for the Apostolic Signature .

On March 17, 1621 he was during the papacy of Pope Gregory XV. appointed titular Archbishop of Hadrianopolis in Haemimonto with special dispensation , since he had not yet received his ordination . He was ordained bishop on April 25, 1621 in the Roman church of Sant'Andrea della Valle Cardinal Maffeo Barberini ; Co- consecrators were Diofebo Farnese , titular patriarch of Jerusalem , and Archbishop Ulpiano (Volpiano) Volpi , bishop of Novara . Giovanni Mascardi , Bishop of Nebbio , was consecrated in the same ceremony .

Pope Gregory XV elevated him to cardinal in the consistory of September 5, 1622 . Cosimo de Torres, now with the rank of cardinal priest , received the cardinal's hat and San Pancrazio as the titular church on March 20, 1623. From May 22, 1623 to 1626 he was Prefect of the Council Congregation . He was Archbishop of the Diocese of Monreale from 1634 to 1642.

Cosimo de Torres died on May 1, 1642 at the age of 58. He was buried in the Basilica of San Pancrazio in Rome, near the tomb of his uncle Cardinal Ludovico de Torres .
