Girolamo Mattei (born February 8, 1547 in Rome , † December 8, 1603 there ) was a cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Due to the influence of his family, Mattei was appointed Apostolic Protonotary by Pope Pius IV in 1560 as a youth . In April 1572 he was appointed a cleric at the Apostolic Chamber by Pope Pius V , of which he became head in 1578 or 1579.

In the consistory of November 16, 1586, Pope Sixtus V accepted him as a cardinal deacon of Sant'Adriano al Foro in the college of cardinals . Cardinal Mattei exerted a strong influence on papal foreign policy under Sixtus V. He also supported his confrontation course against the English Queen Elizabeth I. At the same time he was also to be sent to Poland as papal legate in order to keep the peace after the death of King Stephen . However, Sixtus later decided on Cardinal Ippolito Aldobrandini as a legate.

During the short pontificate of Urban VII. , Gregory XIV. And Innocent IX. Between 1590 and 1591 Mattei was one of the most influential cardinals in the Curia. Under Gregory XIV in 1591 he became prefect of the Council Congregation , which he remained until his death. Under Clement VIII, who was elected in January 1592, he was responsible for the reorganization of ecclesiastical finances and was accepted into the class of cardinal priests; he received the titular church of San Pancrazio . In addition, he was entrusted with the question of the reconciliation of the Church and the French King Henry of Navarre , who had been excommunicated by Sixtus V in 1588. After Henry converted to Catholicism on July 25, 1593, the way was paved for papal absolution and recognition as king in 1595. After Mattei founded the Collegio Mattei in 1603 , he died that same year. He was buried in the family vault of the Church of Santa Maria in Aracoeli .
