The Archdiocese of Monreale ( Latin : Archidioecesis Montis Regalis , Italian : Arcidiocesi di Monreale ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Italy , located in Sicily .
It belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Palermo in the ecclesiastical region of Sicily and is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Palermo .
history
The Archdiocese of Monreale was founded in 1183 by Pope Lucius III. at the instigation of King Wilhelm II and his Vice Chancellor Matheus as a political counterweight to the Archdiocese of Palermo , whose bishop was elected by the cathedral chapter according to old law and not determined by the king. The basis was the S. Maria Nuova monastery founded by Wilhelm II in 1176.
By December 2, 2000, there was metropolitan of the ecclesiastical province of Monreale that of John Paul II. By the Apostolic Constitution Ad maiori consulendum was dissolved. The Archdiocese of Monreale then became a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Palermo, but retained its status as an Archdiocese.
