The diocese of Mazara del Vallo ( Latin Dioecesis Mazariensis , Italian Diocesi di Mazara del Vallo ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Sicily with its seat in Mazara del Vallo . It belongs to the ecclesiastical province of Palermo in the ecclesiastical region of Sicily and is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Palermo .

history

The diocese of Mazara del Vallo was established by Roger I in 1093 . The bishops of the 12th century saw themselves at times as successors to the bishops of the Lilybaeum diocese, which perished during the Norman conquest . For a long time it was a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Monreale . When the ecclesiastical province of Monreale was dissolved on December 2, 2000, the diocese was assigned to the ecclesiastical province of Palermo .
