Dieter Girgensohn

Dieter Girgensohn (born May 30, 1934 in Riga ) is a German church historian .

Life

Due to the events of the Second World War , the family moved to Posen in 1939–1940 and had to flee in 1945 , which brought them to the vicinity of Göttingen . He graduated from the University of Göttingen in 1960 with a degree in the history of the Middle Ages and modern times. There he received his doctorate with a thesis on Peter von Pulkau . His academic teachers were Alfons Lhotsky and Hermann Heimpel . From 1960 to 1963 he worked at the German Historical Institute in Rome and worked on the collection of papal bulls until 1198, a project of the Academy of Sciences in Göttingen . In 1967 he was able to get a permanent position at the Max Planck Institute for History in Göttingen, which he held until his retirement in 1999.

The focus of his research is the politics of the popes in the Great Western Schism , in particular the negotiations between Benedict XIII. and Gregory XII. (1407-1408) and the Council of Pisa 1409. In recent years he has mainly deals with the history of the Republic of Venice occupied in the late middle ages, with special attention to the Church's history.

Girgensohn was chairman of the Göttingen local association of the SPD and long-standing financial policy spokesman in the district council.

He married twice, in 1960 and 1986. The first marriage had a son and a daughter. He has been a widower since 2008.
