Church province of Monreale

The ecclesiastical province of Monreale is a former ecclesiastical province of the ecclesiastical region Sicily of the Roman Catholic Church in Italy .

The ecclesiastical province of Monreale was the largest ecclesiastical province of Sicily and encompassed almost the entire west of Sicily. The metropolitan seat was the Archdiocese of Monreale , suffragan dioceses were the dioceses of Agrigento , Caltanissetta , Mazara del Vallo , Piazza Armerina and Trapani .

On December 2, 2000, the ecclesiastical province of Monreale was dissolved by Pope John Paul II with the Apostolic Constitution Ad maiori consulendum . The Archdiocese of Monreale became a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Palermo , but retained its archdiocese status. The former suffragan dioceses of the church province Monreale were assigned to other church provinces. The diocese of Mazara del Vallo and the diocese of Trapani were assigned to the ecclesiastical province of Palermo . The former suffragan diocese of Agrigento was elevated to the status of the Archdiocese of Agrigento and at the same time the metropolitan seat of the newly founded Church Province of Agrigento . This ecclesiastical province was also assigned the diocese of Caltanissetta and the diocese of Piazza Armerina .
