Poggio Bustone is 95 km northeast of Rome , 32 km east of Terni and 18 km north of Rieti . It is located in a panoramic position on the northern edge of the Conca Di Rieti valley surrounded by the mountains of the Reatine Abruzzo . The municipality stretches from the north shore of Lago Lungo in the valley plain (371 mslm) to the 1,678 m high Cima d'Arme. Poggio Bustone is a member of the Comunità Montana Montepiano Reatino .

The municipality includes the districts of Borgo Acquarisciana, Borgo Colli, Borgo Provaroni and Borgo San Pietro.

The community is located in earthquake zone 1 (highly endangered).

The neighboring municipalities are Cantalice , Leonessa , Rieti and Rivodutri .
