history

The place has its origins in antiquity as an estate of the Roman family of Quinctilius . 770 a locus Quintiliani is mentioned for the first time. In 1157 a fortified village is secured by the Castellum Quintiliani , which secures the exit of the Rieti Valley. In the 15th century the place came into the possession of the Sforza family , which provoked the town of Rieti, which no longer saw its territory under its own control. In 1501 the soldiers of Rieti, under the command of Vitelozzo Viteli, managed to take the fortress. This event meant a serious setback for Contigliano, which then had only 90 inhabitants. Subsequently, it shared the story of Rieti.
